CSSRA BULLETIN #2

PLEASE ENSURE YOU HAVE YOUR SCHOOL ID AT ALL TIMES DURING THIS REGATTA. THE SAME ONE YOU HAD IN WELLAND.

I’ve made a couple of small changes to the Women’s Friday-Sunday routine. I’ve removed the SW4x from practice on Friday AM because Victoria’s race schedule has her there until very late in the day on Friday and I want to cut that down. There MAY be a paddle in St. Catharines Friday PM for crews advancing from Friday’s heats. I will determine that on Friday. There will be no PM Friday practice for anybody who did not race on Friday–most of those rowers will practice Saturday morning.

For the women, if you are not racing on Friday, I don’t want to see you at the race course. Saturday is a MASSIVE day with some very difficult heats. We MUST be at our absolute peak ability to perform on that day. Spending it in the sun on Friday is NOT the way to do achieve a peak performance.

For those there on Friday, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate and hydrate some more. Stay out of the sun and off your feet.

FIRST CSSRA BULLETIN

Hard to believe there are just 12 days left in our high school rowing season. I hope that a good number of you will continue on with Summer and Fall rowing so that when I see you again in November, you will have gained that much more experience, speed and ability! Let’s do our very best to make these remaining days together as productive as we can to build our highest possible speed!! We’re almost there!

We have City Champs this Saturday. I will send out something about that tomorrow. Following that, we will practice on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday as normal. Thursday morning, we will load the boats for CSSRA in St. Catharines. Following boat loading, we will be heading down to St. Catharines on the bus for the day. I will get more details on this from Ms. Craven. We will be leaving Hamilton at 9am, arriving at Henley Island at 10. We will rig all the boats and then be ready when the course opens for practice at noon. Each crew will be scheduled in their boat for one loop of the course. When you are out there, do not linger because others are waiting to row with you. This will go until 3PM, when we will head back to Hamilton. Go home, have supper and get a good night’s sleep because it all starts the next day!

CSSRA is much like Welland, except it’s three days long. Some of us will row on Friday. Some may not row until Saturday. And hopefully a number of us will be rowing on Sunday. Events that require a heat, a semi and a final will race heats on Friday, Semis on Saturday and Finals on Sunday. Events that do not require a semi will row the heat on Saturday and the final on Sunday. Events that are straight finals are on Sunday only. You will race a maximum of two races in a day.

Weigh ins happen much like they did in Welland, with a window of about 2-3 hours in the morning. All crews in weight class events have to weigh in, as do all coxswains, no matter which category they are in. I will let you know times.

I will be scheduling certain crews for a morning paddle in St. Catharines before racing. I will let you know who and when. When doing this, I take into account when your races are….so if you aren’t racing until 2PM on that day, I’m not going to bring you to the course at 6:30AM for a paddle! Many crews who are staying in St. Catharines have the option of going back to their hotel after a morning paddle. We do not (unless you are staying over). There is also evening practice after racing, so I may take the option of sending a crew out for a loop or two of the course following racing on each of the days. Again, I will let you know when I see the draw.

SNRC 2016 – Driving Directions

Some parents have asked about driving directions to SNRC.  Here is a link to the directions:

Click to access snrc-parent-information.pdf

A condensed version is here.

Be aware that if you take the Highway 406 route into Dain City (aka Welland) that the bridge over the canal at the race course is closed to vehicle traffic.  You will be able to get to the parking lot that is at the former John Deere factory (Canal Street) , but this is not the side you want.   You need to take highway 54 around to Dain City.   Use a GPS, or take the Highway 20 route.  The Highway 20 route puts you on the right side.     However the best route is the one that I take and it is Victoria Avenue through Vineland to Highway 3

For those taking Vineland Avenue (Highway 24)

  • take QEW Niagara
  • take Victoria Avenue Exit (highway 24)
  • follow Victoria Avenue all the way to Highway 3 (this is about 25 minutes)
  • take a left at Chambers Corners (there is an Avondale on the corner)
  • this is Forks Road West
  • Take Forks West road all the way until you get to the old Welland Canal
  • The race course is right there,  It cannot be missed.  Seriously you will not miss it.

For those taking HWY 406

  • •I would strongly suggest that you check Google Maps for this one
  • the bridge closure at the canal (aka race course) puts you on the wrong side of the race course where the parents tent will be.

For those taking HWY 20 through Smithville and Wellandport

  • Turn off HWY 27 on to Broadway
  • Cross the canal and turn right (South) on to Canal Bank Street
  • Turn right (West) on to Forks Road
  • The parking lot is on the left as soon as you cross the bridge
