Here are the race times for Saturday, as well as what times you need to be there. NOTE: There are no weigh-ins if you are in a weight class. It is the coach’s honour system, and we’re all honourable guys! You may…and are encouraged….to arrive earlier to cheer your teammates on, but the times I’ve put on here for arrival are the latest possible—you shouldn’t arrive any LATER than that.
Warmup should be done 20 minutes prior to your race consisting of the following: 3′ very light paddle. Then do 4′, 3′, 1′, 1′ at 18-20-22-24 with full pressure. Paddle for another three minutes, but with 10 stroke bursts at the 1′, 2′ and 3′ marks. You want to time this so that you have about 5′ to race time after your warmup. You should be breathing at an elevated rate when you get off the machine.
Also, please plan on staying until about 1:30pm to help with clean up.
For the novices, a couple of MAJOR points to remember:
1. BEWARE THE RABBIT! If someone else starts at some insane pace and is way ahead of you after 100 metres, ignore them. Stick to YOUR plan, which is to race at 28-30 strokes a minute with as good technique as you can….and working as hard as you can. The rabbit will soon come back to the pack, trust me.
2. NERVES ARE OK! Your body is telling you that you have put some effort into preparing for this. Pre-race nerves happen to all rowers….that we’re learning how to deal with them now is a GOOD thing!
3. WATCH & LEARN FROM YOUR SENIORS. We are very fortunate to have some really good senior athletes in our group. I encourage the novices to observe how they prepare for a race. Watching their races, I want you to notice the consistency of their strokes and how it relates to their splits: when they settle into their race plan, they will make the same stroke each time, and the split will not waver.
