Do not forget:  Your racing unisuit, changes of clothes, warm wear, sunscreen, hat, rain gear, and school ID (this is a new one, but we’ll need it if you make a final).

Here is the day sheet.  Do not be late for pre-race meetings.  Pay attention to when you are supposed to launch and retrieve boats/oars from the dock–we need huge help with this on Sunday and I can guarantee you my level of happiness will not be very high if I find out that munching on a donut in the parents tent was more important to you than launching or retrieving the crew you were assigned to help—ESPECIALLY if it is a junior novice crew!!!!  We’re a TEAM.  Be helpful.

ALL ROWERS TO BE ONSITE IN ST. CATHARINES FOR 7AM ON SUNDAY for rigging, regardless of what time your races are.  Racing starts at 8am and boats need to be rigged quickly.  I will confirm the start time for the coach and coxswain meeting, but it will likely be at 7am.  All coxies need to attend, regardless of what time you are racing.

Coxwains, please read Dina’s post on the regatta.  All rowers, get your parents to read it if they haven’t already.   It contains course information and directions that you will find very useful.

Here is the race plan for the women (plus Alex, Ethan & Ben). We have kept it relatively simple, due to the fact the coxies (and the rowers) will be dealing with all the excitement and nervousness that comes with regatta days! If you’re nervous on Sunday, remember that EVERY SINGLE OTHER ROWER IN ST. CATHARINES, is feeling the same thing. And if they aren’t, that’s a problem. Mike Spracklen, a legendary rowing coach for Canada and numerous other countries, said about nerves:

You will never win an Olympcs or World Championship if you are not afraid. The deer in the forest escapes the wolf because he is nervous. The mother bear protects her cub, because she is nervous. Nerves are there to help you.”

Remember—as your heart is pounding out of your chest, to TRY TO RELAX, and REGULATE YOUR BREATHING! Stuff will happen Sunday that we didn’t anticipate. How we deal with it moving forward is how we’ll conquer it.  You can control what you do, not what anybody else does, so go out and have the best darn race of your lives!!!

BRING YOUR TWO 7/16THS WRENCHES TOMORROW! A roll of electrical tape will come in VERY handy as well! If you don’t have any, buy them. Boat loading is not until 10AM. We need all hands on deck for this because there are many tasks to be done. It may be possible to de-rig and load a boat after the morning practice, HOWEVER this needs to be cleared with Jake and one of the coaches first. A small group will row at 6AM (NOT 5:10AM). Following this row, you can go away for two hours and come back for de-rigging and loading at 10am.
De-rigging and loading (same as unloading and rigging), is a CLUB event! If you see people needing help, help them. It is NOT a “I’m rowing, or I rowed this boat so I’m only going to de-rig and load my boat” event. If I tell you to de-rig and load a boat that we aren’t rowing, it’s because I want the proceedings to move quicker and not be standing around waiting for three hours.

Do not leave for someone else, a job that can be done by you.

I’m pairing each novice up with an experienced rower. It is the sole job of the experienced rowers to help the novices and show them what to do.

–Coaches will tell you what boats need to be de-rigged and loaded;
–loosen the bolts on the riggers, then once loose, use your hands to spin them off. Lift the rigger off and MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHICH SEAT IT CAME OFF! Seniors, please bring a black sharpie and put the seat number somewhere on the rigger–I can show you the best place. This will make rigging a lot easier. Bolts, nuts and washers go back on the boat IN THE HOLES THEY CAME FROM! Do not forget this, as it can be very difficult to tell where they go back on. Seniors, please point this out to your juniors!!!
–riggers are then taped together two at a time with electrical tape–make sure there are markings saying which boat they came from. If not, find me and tell me.
–seats need to be bungee corded in, otherwise they can fly off on the QEW and hit/fall onto boats below. You will then carry your de-rigged boat to the trailer and wait patiently.
–I will be at the trailer showing you how to tie straps. Do not hang off the straps or reef on them—this can crack the hull. But tie them as tightly as possible. Get a coach or Jake to check before walking away.
–all oars associated with your boat MUST BE PUT ON THE TRAILER! Oars go on when the top two racks have been loaded, in the front of the trailer.
–sweep riggers go in the rear of the trailer. sculling riggers go in the bed of the truck. It is a HUGE trailer load–please pack as neatly and efficiently as possible.
