Below are the crews for the Bennett Regatta in Buffalo next week. Times are not known yet–I will publish these when the draw is released.
Because we’re racing as Leander, you will need a red t-shirt shirt over top of a white long sleeved shirt. Do not wear your Westdale unisuit. This is the only regatta we need to do this for this year.
Many of these events are events we won’t race in future regattas. (you will notice there are no quads racing next week. You will also see a novice women’s entry where, unfortunately there are no novice events going forward). I have made boatings based on trying to replicate as closely as possible, crews we think we will see at CSSRA. We also decided to limit a majority of novices to one event each for their first regatta.
Michaela (Sequoia’s Mom), is putting together a regatta document for the parents and rowers. There is a LOT of information in these documents, so please take the time to read. We’re going to ask you to be there early on Sunday morning in order to get our boats rigged. So even if you aren’t racing until noon, you’ll need to be there likely around 7am. At the end of the day, we will de-rig and load the trailer for the trip back to Hamilton, then unload it and rig on Sunday night. There will be no practice on Monday the 7th. Please plan for an early start and a late finish Sunday.
A final note. We are looking closely at how you PREPARE FOR YOUR RACES (do you eat well? Dress properly? Show up prepared? HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH NERVES? (do you freak out? Or do you chill with tunes? Do you find a way to positively channel the energy when your body is asking you “What the hell are you doing??”) HOW HELPFUL ARE YOU AROUND THE TRAILER? (a friend of mine called it “Valet Rowing”–where you show up and your boat is miraculously rigged. You will be LOVED by coaches and teams alike if you are helpful. Maura is VERY good at that stuff. If you follow her lead, you will excel at this!) HOW MUCH OF A TEAM PLAYER ARE YOU? (Cheering for our crews is a big part of regattas. Y’all trained together for 6 months, so supporting each other is good!) HOW DO YOU RACE?? Do you go out and practice what you trained for? Or do nerves cause a complete mental breakdown in your ability to do anything other than breathe?? We’ve told you all that you’ll be racing once at CSSRA, and that is true. If we have decisions to make about a second race, often those decisions are based on the above criteria. So if you’re having trouble dealing with race day ‘stuff’, please talk to us. We’ve all been there, have all gone through it. It’s OK to be nervous–and dealing with nerves is an everyday part of ALL sport. We just don’t want you to be completely impaired by it.
