Summer Rowing, Row for Heart, and LTR Friends & Family Day

Dear Athletes & Parents,

More information will be given at our year-end party on Sunday, June 7th (7pm at Kelsey’s in Westdale), but here are a few quick links to help navigate the summer rowing opportunities and options for athletes of all ages:

1) Summer Rowing Information & Registration – Wednesday, June 10th, 5-7pm @LBC
Event Link: https://www.facebook.com/events/352936471571273/
This is for club competitive and bantam, as well as other programs you’d like to learn about (like Learn to Row (LTR) and Adult Recreational Rowing). Come meet the coaches, ask some questions, and see what works best for you and your availability/interests! Summer rowing is a great way to stay involved, fit, and on-top of your rowing technique before the school season starts again. You’ll also meet some great people!

2) Heart & Stroke “Row for Heart” – Signup Available
Contact: leanderrow4heart@gmail.com
Flyer: Heart and Stroke – Informational Flyer
Registration Form: Heart and Stroke – F15 Team Registration Form
LBC’s Row for Heart program still has a few spots remaining for teams, and the coordinators are hoping to have each highschool represented. You do NOT need any prior experience to compete in Row For Heart – the coaches will teach you everything you need to know, and the program accepts participants aged 16-years-old and up.

Row for Heart is a great way to try rowing, have a fun with friends, and meet new people. The Ancaster Royals already have a parents 8+ that’s keen to challenge parents at other schools (including Westdale!) to make a team and compete for fun during this summer session.  If teams are unable to find 8 crew members, then the coordinators are allowing teams to row in a 4+ instead, still competing in the final regatta on July 19th. Row for Heart is a keystone program that supports both highschool rowing programs and club rowing. Keen to try it? Contact Andrea Jansen for more information at leanderrow4heart@gmail.com.

3) Friends & Family “Learn to Row” Day – Saturday, June 27th, 9am-12pm @LBC
Event Link: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/friends-family-learn-to-row-day-tickets-17158527618
Highschool rowers and club rowers are invited to bring a guest (friend or family member) to a fun “Learn to Row” day, where you get to row with your guest and coaches will be available to answer questions about the sport and/or summer rowing opportunities at all ages and levels of fitness.

Enjoy!

Swim Test & Summer Jobs

Hey Westdale,

First off
st_patricks_day_wallpaper_03

This is a quick post because Leander Boat Club has just determined the mandatory swim-test day: Wednesday, March 25th (next week), at 3:00pm at the Dalewood Swimming Pool. The swim test is mandatory for all athletes rowing outdoor. The only exception is if you have NLS/Bronze Cross and have provided an up-to-date photocopy to your coach (please check on that). Mike and I will confirm who needs to attend the swim test on Monday, once you’re all back from March Break. This comes one day before the mandatory parents meeting for all athletes rowing outdoor (friendly reminder: it’s on Thursday, March 26th, @7pm in the WSS library).

Secondly, Leander Boat Club has also released some summer job opportunities for highschool students. You can access the postings here:
Learn to Row/Bantam Youth Instructor ($12/hr)
Recreational/Bantam Coordinator ($13/hr)

Enjoy the break!

Missing Justice Seat, Start Info for Summer Rowing, and Survey Feedback

Hi Athletes,

Three quick (but important things):

1) In case you missed it, Craig Pollack has posted an update on the start of summer rowing. You can find the information by clicking here (follow that blog for more updates): http://leandermanager.wordpress.com/2014/06/13/bring-a-716-wrench/

2) On a more serious note, one of the Justice seats is missing 😦 . I’d like to ask anyone who was at the rigging & washing on Monday after school to please let me know if you recall where the seat would be (this is especially important for Nimeash & Philippe, who rigged/washed that particular boat). We are only missing ONE of the seats, which is concerning, because it means the seats aren’t still packaged up – instead the one seat is actually missing/lost/not with the boat. If any of you at rigging/washing on Monday remember seeing both seats in the boat, or one of the seats in an odd spot, please let me (Alessandra) know asap. If the seat is not found, then Westdale will be charged for its loss.

3) Last of all, if you haven’t already filled it out, then please click here to provide some feedback on the outdoor season: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/QGHYT2Q – It’s three pages in total (10 questions in total) & will take about 3-5minutes to complete. It’s 100% anonymous & enables us to improve the program (or highlights things that are working well & should be kept the same). Thanks!

Cheers,
Alessandra

Summer Rowing – Working Links

Hi Rowers,

I’ve been informed that the hyperlinks didn’t work in my last post, so I’ve updated that post with working hyperlinks & am re-posting the links here JUST in case.

Here are the four links you need (minus all the extra info I listed in the previous blog post):

1) The main blog you’ll need to check is this one: http://leandermanager.wordpress.com/

2) The summer rowing information for Jr. Men (this includes ALL highschool aged athletes) can be found here: http://leandermanager.wordpress.com/lbc-junior-men/

3) The summer rowing information for the Jr. Women (including ALL highschool aged athletes) can be found here: http://leandermanager.wordpress.com/leander-boat-club-and-mcmaster-university-rowing-training-blog/

4) The Summer Regatta Schedule can be found here: https://leandermanager.files.wordpress.com/2014/06/summer-sched.pdf

Hopefully this helps,
Alessandra

Summer Rowing Information

Hello athletes!

Here’s the information you’ve all been waiting for: SUMMER ROWING INFO! 🙂

1) The main blog you’ll need to check is this one: http://leandermanager.wordpress.com/

2) The summer rowing information for Jr. Men (this includes ALL highschool aged athletes) can be found here: http://leandermanager.wordpress.com/lbc-junior-men/

…you will be coached by the very lovely & talented Jess Bill, who is currently the St. Mary’s Head Coach. She’s a fantastic coach & will no doubt be a lot of fun to work with. She’ll also be assisted by Ryan Walters (current StM assistant coach) and two others (Chris Jacques & Alec Mannarino)

3) The summer rowing information for the Jr. Women (including ALL highschool aged athletes) can be found here: http://leandermanager.wordpress.com/leander-boat-club-and-mcmaster-university-rowing-training-blog/

…don’t be fooled by the link’s URL title, it’s definitely the information you need for the Jr. Women. Craig Pollock will be the main coach, and Peter DeNew will be assisting. I will also be occassionally assisting during the month of June (perhaps for just the women, maybe for both groups – not sure yet).

4) The Summer Regatta Schedule can be found here: https://leandermanager.files.wordpress.com/2014/06/summer-sched.pdf

…try to make sure you’re available for those dates, as they’re your racing dates!

5) “But I go to camp” – don’t worry, rowing ENDS in August, so you could technically do both! Unless you’re a camp counsellor & plan on working the whole summer, in which case you might be out of luck. That said, check out the schedule to see if it works – you might be able to swing both!

6) When does it start? – Steffan has mentioned that the official start-date will be June 16th, but there may be some optional practices in the meantime. Simply check the blog (posted above) to stay updated. All of the Summer Rowing coaches understand that you’re going through exams & that exams will be your top priority for a while, but you should still indicate your interest to them so that they’re aware you’re keen to join. Payment for rowing fees/dues will be determined by the cost of a “Highschool Upgrade” (check with Steffan for full pricing details – but there’s a serious discount because you’ve already rowed highschool).

Whatever you choose to do, I hope you all have an amazing summer! 🙂

Cheers,
Alessandra

PS – Thank you to everyone who came to rig & wash boats this afternoon, it was a huge help! For those of you that missed it, I’m afraid to say you missed out on some pretty awesome popsicle treats…

This meeting is for any & all athletes keen to row with Leander Boat Club this summer. Given my newly discovered graphic-design skills, I’ve decided to convey this information through a most detailed PC-Paint portrayal:

Summer Rowing Info Comic

Of course, the quick version is: LBC Summer Rowing Info Meeting for interested athletes is this weekend on Saturday, May 24th, after the City Champs races but BEFORE the medal ceremony at LBC. See you all there!
